R&D | Real-Time Monitoring: FlySight’s study at SPIE Sensors + Imaging 2024

Sep 10, 2024

At the forefront of innovation in autonomous systems, FlySight is set to make a level presentation at the upcoming SPIE Sensors + Imaging 2024 conference, scheduled from September 16 to 19.

Giuseppe Martino, Data Scientist at FlySight, will present groundbreaking research on the second day of the conference, dedicated to “Autonomous Systems for Security and Defence.”

The presentation, titled “Drone-based Monitoring on the Edge Using a High-Resolution Payload,” is a collaborative effort by FlySight’s researchers team: Giuseppe Martino alongside with Niccolò Camarlinghi, Benedetto Michelozzi, Antonio Di Tommaso, Giacomo Fontanelli, and Andrea Masini. It will take place on September 17, 2024, from 11:10 to 11:30 BST in the Lowther room at the Edinburgh International Confrence Centre.

Study on Real-Time Object Detection

The study explores the feasibility of performing real-time object detection on edge devices using 100 MP images. Leveraging advanced technology, the team captured images of a peri-urban scenario featuring vehicles and pedestrians with a DJI M300 drone equipped with an iXM-100 Phase One camera.

To enhance the monitoring capabilities over vast areas, the researchers fine-tuned a YOLOX-Tiny object detector on the VisDrone2019 dataset. This approach achieved a mean average precision of 0.32 at IOU=0.5, demonstrating the potential for high-accuracy detection.

Advanced Deployment Techniques, Balancing Real-Time Processing and Detection Capabilities and an Impressive Detection Range
are crucial for applications requiring both speed and accuracy, enhancing security and defense operations through improved situational awareness.

The presentation by Giuseppe Martino will offer valuable insights into the drone-based monitoring and edge computing.
