The EDA launches a comprehensive study on the use of digital twins for military purposes, along with an upcoming workshop “Digital Twinning in Defence Operations”.
The EDDI project will investigate the applicability of digital twin technologies in various combat domains, including Space, Maritime, Air, Land, and Cyber, in collaboration with CapTech Simulation Technologies and other relevant CapTech communities. This avant-garde initiative aims to enhance the situational awareness and predictive capabilities of commanders and decision-makers, significantly improving the planning and execution of defense operations. The use of digital twins in defense can optimize training, mission planning, and execution, providing real-time operational insights and advanced decision-making support.
The EDDI consortium is led by FlySight (IT) and includes key partners such as HENSOLDT (DE), INEGI (PT), RE-liON (NL), TNO (NL), and UNI.LU (LU). The project’s goal is not only to develop a demonstrator for military applications but also to promote an extensive consultation strategy to engage with various stakeholders, including experts from industry, academia, and the military.
STUDY STRATEGY: A Collaborative Approach to Innovation
The Consultation Strategy, integral to EDDI, emphasizes stakeholder engagement, insight gathering, and collaboration for the development of a digital twin demonstrator for military use.
The project envisions numerous applications for digital twinning, such as replicating high-value assets like vehicles and weaponry for training purposes, enhancing human operator strategies, and integrating semi-autonomous robots. By leveraging AI, simulation technologies, and advanced computing, EDDI aims not only to improve current military operations but also to shape future defense strategies.
The Consultation Strategy is a vital component of the project, aiming to engage stakeholders, gather valuable insights, and foster collaboration throughout the development of the digital twin demonstrator for military use. The consultation strategy includes initial dialogues with Armed Forces to narrow down potential application scenarios, focusing on those of utmost importance. This approach ensures efficient resource use and alignment of the project’s objectives with real-world military needs.
A key part of this strategy is the upcoming workshop scheduled for June 27, 2024.

THE WORKSHOP: A Multi-Track Learning Experince
This event will bring together a diverse range of stakeholders, including domain experts, defense actors, industry representatives, and others, to participate in parallel workshops. These sessions are designed to foster in-depth discussions, knowledge exchange, and to gather input that will guide the project’s direction.
OBJECTIVES and WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The event aims to facilitate dynamic exchanges between end-users and experts on the application of digital twin technologies in military and dual-use applications. The workshop will include discussions across various themes to solicit feedback and integrate diverse perspectives into the development of digital twin technology.
The workshop will assemble representatives from all military branches, including Navy, Air Force, and Army Staffs, along with experts in actual combat scenarios. The goal is to identify and analyze the most relevant operational situations where digital twins can offer strategic advantages. Public and private stakeholders are also encouraged to participate in enhancing the collaborative environment and contributing to the discourse.
